In terms of technical support, RETN’s Network Operations Centre (NOC) excelled, providing monitoring of the network performance and predicting all potential issues and resolving them before they affected the services. The volume of technical support enquiries decreased significantly from an average of 12 per month to just 1-2, primarily for bandwidth adjustments. RETN provided 24/7 dedicated representatives who could respond to requests within 10 minutes, with complex issues resolved within 4 hours. Overall satisfaction reached 98 out of 100, contributing to improved network management capabilities for Catixs.
As a result of these initiatives, Catixs achieved significant benefits, including approximately $10,000 in annual savings on bandwidth waste and an increase in European clients from 2 to 10. During the collaboration, service availability in the European region reached 99.992%, while client satisfaction ratings improved from 3.2 to 4.8.

The resilient design of the RETN network came to the fore during the worst days. Despite the active war actions, we developed a new route Lutsk-Monastyrysche to provide a redundant path towards Europe, and found time to support numerous charitable causes for children in Ukraine, our colleagues and loved ones. None of this could have been achieved without local infrastructure partners and other European telcos whose staff went out into the missile craters.
Simultaneously, RETN pursued strategic expansion across Europe and Asia, opening new offices in Vilnius, Singapore, Helsinki, Yerevan and Sofia, to better support local clients and our many network developments.

RETN expanded its enterprise offerings with direct off-ramps to Google and Oracle Cloud and qualified as a Dell Technologies Gold Solution Provider. As a testament to all our efforts, RETN was awarded Best Pan-European Carrier at the Global Carrier Awards 2023, the most widely respected industry awards organisation.

The reasons for their continued use are clear. Easier to provision and plan than terrestrial cables (with their border crossings, wayleaves, and issues with land use rights), they provide cheap, ubiquitous access to a different continent…except when they don’t. The typical subsea cable system is made up of multiple consortium partners, not to mention the backhaul partners from the landing stations.
Installs and upgrades take forever, and that easier provisioning takes a lot of time also. And don’t even think about the mean time to repair in case of a subsea fiber cut, what terrestrially takes 8 hours to repair, on subsea can take 4 months, all the while there are no SLA credits. Of course, traditional terrestrial cables suffer from some of the same issues’ consortiums present, not to mention the additional cost as each partner jostles for their fair share. Now for Europe to Asia, it doesn’t have to be this way.

Working together since 2009, in 2021 BIX came to RETN facing the challenge of interconnecting its newly launched first international Point of Presence (PoP) in Vienna with its core infrastructure in Budapest. This undertaking required expertise in optimising network performance and seamless data exchange between Hungarian and international internet providers. Given the rapid growth and evolving nature of the telecommunications industry in Central and Eastern Europe, it was crucial for BIX to establish a robust international presence and enhance connectivity to meet the rising demands of cross-border data exchange. In 2022 RETN was asked to provide two diverse 100Gbps wavelength services for BIX’s new Vienna PoP.
Due to the high demand of the newly established BIX Vienna PoP, BIX required the upgrade the Budapest – Vienna wavelength from 100Gbps to 400Gbps.
RETN leveraged its extensive network infrastructure and expertise in delivering high-capacity and reliable connectivity solutions, provisioning a 400Gbps wavelength in 5 weeks’ time and handing over the service upgrade during a hot-cut. With a deep understanding of the Central and Eastern European region, RETN recognised the need for BIX to have a scalable and future-proof network infrastructure.

The tight timeframe was only one of the challenges that RETN had to overcome. With the customer already having several different routes to its datacentre, the task was to build a unique route to avoid any interference or dependency on the customer's existing infrastructure, including an alternative entry point to the datacentre itself. Fortunately, in line with RETN’s growth strategy, it has recently launched several new metro network rings and was able to leverage deep expertise in building its own fibre cable networks to meet the customer’s requirements.

","text_content":"The most exciting part of the challenge was on the tech side. RETN needed to begin by carefully planning the spectrum to ensure maximum spectral efficiency. With such a large bandwidth volume, even a small error in planning could result in significant penalties. To accomplish this, it utilized the latest generation of optic engines, which required 0.72 THz of the spectrum or 15% of the total size of the C-band (4.8 THz). By comparison, the previous generation of optic engines required 1.27 dBm and a similar Q-value margin, or 26% of the C-band - highlighting the significant difference between the two generations.

In Layer 1 environments, where restoration is often dependent on physical fiber repair, such incidents can typically take days - or significantly longer in subsea scenarios.
Despite the scale and complexity of the operation, key performance indicators - including latency and jitter were maintained throughout. The incident provided a real-world validation of the new route’s performance and readiness, even before it formally entered service.
The Tallinn–Cēsis route forms part of RETN’s strategic network expansion programme, aimed at strengthening connectivity between Northern and Central Europe through greater route and supplier diversity. The new line delivers:

Bandwidth demand growth seemed unstoppable for a long time. As recently as 2020, year-on-year demand increased 45%. Fast-forward to 2024, and that pace is down to 29%, but is still tremendous. Capacity demand growth is driven by AI and emerging applications, that exacerbate pressure on network infrastructure. IoT adds massive scale — billions of sensors and smart devices transmitting continuous data, demands more bandwidth from year to year. The content companies are another force pushing this industry to grow exponentially.
The rise of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has transformed life across the EU; its direct impact on end customers is hard to overestimate. According to the Eurostat report \"Young people – digital world,\" in 2024, an impressive 97% of young people aged 16-29 use the internet daily—up from 89% in 2015. The digital age gap is narrowing; in 2015, daily internet usage was 24 percentage points higher among young people than the total population (89% vs. 65%), but by 2024, this gap has shrunk to just 9 percentage points (97% vs. 88%).
RETN, that serves the biggest content companies in the world, various ISPs and enterprises in more than 44 countries around the globe, has been building its network to surpass the growing demand.
Earlier this year, RETN deployed 400G ZR+ optics across its Pan-European network, enabling it to transform its IP backbone, increasing available bandwidth, increasing network efficiency, reducing power consumption and minimising field engineer visits across Europe.
This upgrade aligns with our strategic focus on meeting future demands, especially as data from RETN for Q1 2025 shows a notable uptake in 100Gservices with 76 implementations, reflecting a strong market shift towards higher bandwidth solutions compared to 53 for 10G services. The implementation of 400G services is still in its early stages, with only 3 reported, indicating a nascent but growing interest in ultra-high bandwidth options.
Customer's Allocated Bandwidth
The growth in customer bandwidth is further illustrated in our data, showing a steady increase in allocated bandwidth from 10.4 Tbps in 2018 to 57.6 Tbps in 2024. This upward trend reflects RETN's commitment to expanding capacity to meet the evolving needs of our customers.
DWDM Network 10G vs. 100G Waves Dynamic
The dynamics of our DWDM network show a significant shift in customer service capacity growth, with a clear trend towards 100G waves. Data indicates that the number of new 100G implementations has increased substantially compared to 10G waves, highlighting the market's transition towards higher bandwidth solutions. This growth reinforces our strategy to focus on deploying 100G and 400G technologies to better serve our customers' needs.
With over 970 Points of Presence (PoPs) worldwide, including recent expansions in Bologna, Milan, Greece, Croatia, Dubai, as well as several in Asia and the US, we are enhancing connectivity and reducing latency. These PoPs are crucial for ensuring our network is resilient and can support growing data demands.
The Eurostat report also indicates that 88% of young people used social networks in 2024, compared to 65% of the total population. Through partnerships with local providers, we ensure reliable internet access, bridging the digital divide and empowering individuals for education and work.
