BIX (Budapest Internet Exchange) was established in 1995 by the Council of Hungarian Internet Providers (ISZT) with the main goal of exchanging Hungarian internet traffic and providing access solutions for regional internet providers.
Over the past 28 years, BIX has grown to include over 90 members and expanded its network to three sites in Budapest (BIX/SZTAKI, T-Systems/Dataplex, Invitech DC10) and one site in Vienna DigitalRealty (Interxion).
These sites are interconnected through a redundant optical backbone using 400G and 800G technologies, with peak of 665Gbps traffic.

Working together since 2009, in 2021 BIX came to RETN facing the challenge of interconnecting its newly launched first international Point of Presence (PoP) in Vienna with its core infrastructure in Budapest. This undertaking required expertise in optimising network performance and seamless data exchange between Hungarian and international internet providers. Given the rapid growth and evolving nature of the telecommunications industry in Central and Eastern Europe, it was crucial for BIX to establish a robust international presence and enhance connectivity to meet the rising demands of cross-border data exchange. In 2022 RETN was asked to provide two diverse 100Gbps wavelength services for BIX’s new Vienna PoP.
Due to the high demand of the newly established BIX Vienna PoP, BIX required the upgrade the Budapest – Vienna wavelength from 100Gbps to 400Gbps.
RETN leveraged its extensive network infrastructure and expertise in delivering high-capacity and reliable connectivity solutions, provisioning a 400Gbps wavelength in 5 weeks’ time and handing over the service upgrade during a hot-cut. With a deep understanding of the Central and Eastern European region, RETN recognised the need for BIX to have a scalable and future-proof network infrastructure.
